Before Pearl was born, I had a very busy and creative job. I was designing all different types of product and had plenty of variety in my day-to-day activities. Staying home with a baby isn't generally like that.
My life these days basically goes...feeding, diaper change, nap time (hopefully), play time, repeat.
During nap times, I rush around trying to get a whole list of things done. I have really gotten burnt out by doing the same things every single day.
This week I decided to do a few simple things to break up the monotony.
This week I decided to do a few simple things to break up the monotony.
If you are also a SAHM and feel a little like you are living in the movie Groundhog Day, maybe some of my ideas can help you too.
1. Re-Decorate
It doesn't need to be anything huge and you can just move stuff around that you already have. Pearl and I spend about 80% of our time in the living room so while she was playing, I swapped out some photos and moved items around on our fireplace mantle and on our bookshelves. I even ended up with a pile of stuff to put in our garage sale. This was the mantle after I finished...
I hate cooking so much and to be honest, I rarely do it. We signed up for a CSA and got our first box of fresh vegetables this week. Having a box of veggies (some of which I have never even cooked before) was a fun challenge. I actually cooked a few times this week and came up with new ideas just because I didn't want any of that food to go to waste. It turned into a creative endeavor that I actually enjoyed.
3. Create Something New
I have been making a lot of bibs lately and doing the same sewing steps over and over again has started to get to me. So, I decided to come up with a new item to put in my etsy shop. I haven't actually sewn any yet, but patterning is my favorite part and I finished that this week.
Anyway, it doesn't have to be a sewing project. You could knit, crochet, scrapbook, paint, draw, write, etc.
4. Make it Special
I had a couple of birthday presents to wrap this week. I decided to make that a creative challenge and created fun name tags instead of just throwing something in a gift bag and attaching a card. I'm trying to think this way more often in anything I do. Is there something you could do with a task that needs completed anyway to make it more creative and special?
5. Play Music!
I have found this week that even while following our regular routine, Pearl and I have more fun when there is music playing. Pearl has some serious moves. I think she is the only person ever who doesn't look awkward dancing to Sufjan Stevens or Radiohead. Watching her dance has been so fun, and having music playing in the background improves my mood as well.

You're becoming a cook!! I knew it would happen one day. :)
ReplyDeleteLove this list!!! WE have started playing more music around this place and it's awesome!!
ReplyDeleteyay for the CSA! Which did you go with?
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad I'm not the only one in burn out mode! The naptimes are getting shorter and fewer, too. I especially dig tip #5: music puts both of us in a better mood!
ReplyDeletethose are the many things i used to do too! Now i don't have time or energy for most of them.

it's a struggle to find the balance, especially once there are more babies!
this is a great reminder to all of us to shake it up!
ReplyDeleteI've been wanting to sign up for CSA...I should just take the leap and do it huh? We definitely need more fresh vegetables in our diets!

Great ideas! xoxo
ReplyDeleteGreat ideas! I definitely get bogged down with every day life too, it's so nice to just break away and do something fun...
ReplyDeleteSounds like my life! And it's so true, I feel WAY more guilty about throwing out local produce than produce fon the grocery.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely good to break up the monotony. I love that you joined a CSA... I'm kind of jealous! Also the clock looks good there!
ReplyDeleteGreat list! :)
ReplyDeleteToday is my niece's birthday and my gifts aren't wrapped yet. I think I've just gotten a great idea how to do it. :) Thanks!

ReplyDeleteI love it!!

i totally hear you on that 'burned out' feeling. i like to set aside time to just be crazy and do whatever the kids (within reason) want to do @ home: painting, dancing, nature exploring in the yard. music is a really big one i our house, we LOVE to just dance and jump around.
ReplyDeleteThese are great ideas. Your mantle is so cute :] The gift is also so pretty. I love when people personalize gifts. Pearl must be so cute rocking out, haha.
ReplyDeleteCan I just tell you that for the longest time {while I was home with her at least} I always {ALWAYS} took a nap when she did, just because keeping up with an infant is so tiring! I love your ideas, now if I could find time to do them!

Sounds like you found great ways to break up the monotony. I was lucky to be able to stay home with my kids when they were babies too. I wouldn't trade that time in for anything in the world. I sure do miss those years.
ReplyDeleteEnjoy the time you have with that beautiful baby.
Great advice! We just redecorated our mantel too and the living room just feels nicer.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great list! For SAHMs or anyone who just needs a little variety in life! I was listening to music yesterday while I was cleaning/cooking and it made it SO much more enjoyable! I need to put music on more often!
ReplyDeleteI SO needed this for today :)
ReplyDeleteI love your gift wrap, adorable! We constantly listen to music, I think it helps so much, especially on rainy days!
ReplyDeleteLove this list. I think I'll do some redecorating today! We've hit a lull in our daily activities and the rain isn't helping.
