Jeremy and I left Thursday afternoon once we both got home from work. We missed all of the potential traffic in Portland, Tacoma, and Seattle. That was a pleasant surprise. Our group plans didn't start until Friday so we were on our own Thursday night. We made great time to Marysville which is where we stayed. Jeremy loves going to casinos so he decided that we should stay in that area so we could go here. I do not like gambling very much, but the casino was not very crowded so I could sit with Jeremy at the table and learn the games he played. My favorite was a card game called "Let It Ride." It was a really simple game which I liked because I could keep up and there wasn't too much to remember. Craps was a fun game to watch, but I was confused by a lot of it. There were guys at the craps table with $5,000+ in chips. Needless to say, the people working the table kept forgetting to give Jeremy the chips he won because he wasn't a high roller like the others. At least Jeremy knew the game well enough to kindly remind them when they forgot about him!
Friday morning we ate our continental breakfast and headed to the ferry. We figured we would keep it casual and not worry about ferry times. It would be fine with us if we had to wait an hour or two for the next boat. We showed up in Anacortes to take the ferry at about 9:40am. When we got to the window to pay for our trip the guy asked which island we were going to. Jeremy told him we were going to Friday Harbor and the guy gave us a funny look. "You know the ferry just left at 9:30? The next boat isn't until 2:45," he said. We had no idea where we would go or what else we would do in the meantime so we decided to just get our ticket and wait. We get to the next window and the lady checks our ticket, "you know the next boat doesn't leave until 2:45, right?" she said. Yep, by that point we definitely knew.
There was not much to do for those five hours. Jeremy tried playing an old arcade video game they had in the waiting area. Only one of the buttons worked so that fifty cents was quickly wasted. There was a tiny gift shop that consisted of a rack of sunglasses with fingerprints all over them, really old used books all marked with a $2.80 price tag, a few mugs, key chains and outdated jackets with a San Juan Islands embroidery on the front.

We quickly ran out of things to do inside so we went outside and a nice lady showed us how to get to the beach. It was a beautiful day. We walked around, Jeremy tried to teach me how to skip rocks, and we attempted to take a few pictures. After the beach trip we grabbed cards from the car and played a bunch of games for the next few hours. It actually turned out to be a lot of fun! We haven't spent quality time like that with each other in a while. Jeremy with squinty old man face. He was concentrating trying to take the photo.
A little bit before the ferry arrived so did our friends and the San Juan Island journey finally began! I will tell you about that tomorrow. I bet the suspense will just kill you before then.-Kira
